In addition, I do think pavan's idea of proportional representation has merit.
Large part of the country's problem is the vote bank politics splitting the country into parts that can never agree with each other. A kind of two nation theory on many levels - some religion, others economics, and so on. Hate is becoming the tool of political parties, rather than work.
As a result, no matter who wins the election, a significant part of the population (majority?) is always orphaned in representation in power. Proportional representation may address that by increasing or decreasing number of seats as per vote, but always, everyone is represented.
I think this is valuable, and if not exactly thus, we should make some effort and come up with ideas that see all Indians represented in the government rather than any party or coalition "winning" India. This ain't a war, it ought to be governance.
