Re: [IAC#RG] Information regarding Italian media stating Ms. Sonia Gandhi has Italian nationality.

Mr Kumar Arun, The best answer to your question should come from Mrs S Gandhi herself. All I can say is that as the President of a major ruling dispensation, she can make such a statement. This statement was made when she was addressing her own party cadres.  Moreover, people like you look towards her for her reaction as she comes from Italy. So as an Indian citizen she felt morally obliged to react to what she thought was a breach of trust by Italy.. Do you see anything wrong there.??  Regards Devinder

Can I ask Mr. Thakur to please tell us under what authority Sonia can accuse government of Italy?
She is neither a minister of foreign/external affairs nor she is prime minister of India. What legal
authority she has to utter such non-sense. Is it not a fabricated report to divert our attention?

Respectfully,

Dr. Kumar Arun

Mr. Sarabjit Roy, A newspaper report published today has the following to say. "Echoing the national anger over the issue of marines, Mrs Sonia Gandhi accused Italy of "betrayal" and asserted that no country will be allowed to take India for granted. She slammed Italy for violating its assurance to the Supreme Court to send back the two marines facing trial for allegedly killing two Indian fishermen and said that all means must be pursued to ensure that the commitment is fulfilled. "The defiance of the Italian government on the question of the two marines and its betrayal of a commitment to our Supreme Court are outright unacceptable . No country can, should, or will be allowed to take India for granted ."

Notwithstanding the foregoing, If what is stated by Mr S Kumar in his email is true, then the question arises why is she giving such a statement against a country to which she and her family owe an allegiance. It does not require an International lawyer to work this one out.  Regards Devinder Thakur

Dear Kumar 8134 (or is that Kumar 61398 ?),

Your email contains 2 distinct statements.

1) That Sonia revived her Italian citizenship in 1992. Can you prove this ? Or is this yet another of your fantasies ?

2) That Rahul and Priyanka were born Italian citizens (also) since Sonia Gandhi was admittedly at the time (1970's) an Italian citizen. That further they have retained their Italian passports/ citizenship and travel on them since they have never renounced Italian citizenship. I really don't see how you can prove the second half of this claim sitting in USA (or is it Shanghai ?). Please put some incontrovertible evidence for your claims, or else we shall have to ban you from posting to our list in future.

In 1992, Sonia revived her citizenship of Italy under Article 17 of the Italian Citizenship Law [Act 91 of 1992]. Rahul and Priyanka were born Italian citizens because Sonia was Italian when she gave birth to them [Italian law based on jure sanguinis]. Hence, they continue be Italians since they never renounced it. Both have been traveling abroad on Italian passports.
