The Rule only speaks of maintaining a safe distance.
When a vehicle in front brakes suddenly (say a cow or child comes
running onto the road) it does not mean that the vehicle behind it
must do so too. It means that such vehicle must decelerate in a
fashion to avoid accident to vehicles in front of or behind it.
If one is driving at 60 kmph, a minimum of 8 car lengths should be
kept between vehicles. At 80- kmph 12 car lengths. If the driver is
older (more reaction time) 2 additional car lengths should be added.
These are the recommended MINIMUM values.
