Re: [IAC#RG] Farmers strugle

Also, there is an issue with the use of land permissions. If agricultural land being switched to "development" is profit, why can't farmers convert their own land for their owned industry instead of being forced to sell cheap for someone else to "develop"?

Agricultural land converting to non-agricultural purposes is not good for country. But it is worse for farmers if they are always doomed to have land that will never yield them profit - not from farming because of policy, and not from changing what they do on it, because the government will not allow.

When prices go high, controls make them "affordable" for people. When prices crash, farmers die alone. Cash crops are among the most terrible problems in this regard. The advertized big money rarely translates to actual profits for those who get suckered in. For example, the Bt Cotton in Vidarbha. Cotton is a crop that requires abundant water. Bt Cotton needs even more water than normal cotton. Vidarbha is also the ground zero for the irrigation scam. A decade of pouring money into irrigation projects has only seen the area of irrigated land DROP so far. Whether the GM cotton is actually a good idea becomes irrelevant when it is produced in a place that cannot provide for the nutrients it needs abundantly. Yet the cartelization ensures that farmers are sold big dreams involving increasing inputs leading to a devastation of soil fertility as well as the water table - which ensures that future years will continue to get tougher than the ones past.

Sitting ducks.

One important reason for failure is that we do not have insurance for farmers. I tried . Nobody is prepared to insure my priduct.

Create a system which will insure farm product at the average price worked between peak and rock botom price within a period.

Stop govt intervention when the agri produce price go up. Allow market to operate.

Work out input cost and fix a selling price with 20 percent profit (at least) for the farmer. Input cost should include wages of the farmer and family .

If the above situation can be created, may be, the farming may survive and suport the country
