Your feelings are suitably registered. Yes jingoism is bad , be it, Hindi or Tamil or Marathi or Bengali or Akhomese.
My objection is to ramming any thing down ones throat ,some pet theory of 'Rashtra Vad'. Why call a cat a 'Maarjal' when it can be' Billi'.
As a Bombay Sapper my language became Marathi /Punjabi/Hindustani and Religion became Hindu/Sikh/Indian Moslem.
So my impatience is not with any lingo or religion but with the arrogance of misplaced superiority ie a sort of racism ,masquerading as sweet reasonableness.
I continue to stand by my conviction of Imposition of Hindi being a grossly retrograde policy. The wise chaps should have selected Sanskrit.
We Indians could have rejoicedNOW , to be capable of communicating in Sanskrit as the Israelis wrt Hebrew.Probably the false sense of secularism of associating Sanskrit with Hinduism and NOT Indian ethos is the stumbling block.A Sanskrit speaking chap can equally be secular or stupid or profound or comic or tragic.

Dear Prof Apte Sir,
Greetings.
It was with great pleasure ,i read your email.
Your article is very enlightening.
One aspect you may like to consider: Japan was and is a monolithic nation.China has become monolithic under C' man Mao Tse Tung (Mao
Zedung). The Japanese and Chinese even dream in their respective Japanese & Chinese. Whereas we had our illustrious leader Nehru who dreamt in English ( as per his own admission!). The two nations ibid have a Rising main of knowledge made of English and their domestic supply line is of Japanese/Chinese ( Cantonese or Mandarin ?) to given an Engineers' example.
Also al most all our netas have their wards brought up in Public schools( mostly English medium),unlike most of our Faujis and Aamadmi
in KVs/Govt .Schools. So, 'Yadha Rajah, Thatha Prajesya '.
Some musing about pursuit of Sanskrit.
1)At least ,in KVs , our children can take Sanskrit as a subject ( which I ensured both my sons study, albeit, rudimentary with the available quality of instruction in KVs). My Mother and Mother-in- law used to ' inoculate' them with 'Telugu' ,during our annual leave ,which my sons would promptly forget once back from leave and are happy picking up Marathi,Punjabi our Regtl lingo s and of course day to day school transactions in Hindi. Possibly, children fortunate to be in their home states and are in State Capital cities ,would pick up Mother tongue as first lingo and Hindi as second lingo with English as a subject. Some of the frequently transferred Central service parents wards would take instead of mother tongue and Hindi, say French,Special English(?), Sanskrit. You are much more aware of all this, but, still I thought for discussion it would be relevant.
2) In AP ,TN,Karnataka & Kerala still some elements striving to protect own Vedic culture have established Veda Pathasalas supported by the
tiny and from them very tiny affluent Brahmin community. Must mention that at least in AP, our political heavy weight Reddi and Kamma( Sub sects of Sudras) people from whom several philonthraphists ,poets, opinion builders ,eminent educationists,Doctors,Technocrats,Scientists, Business men, Eminenent Bureaucrats have made an impact on Telugu psyche in recent times, have been supportive ( some aware of the Potential of Vedic Studies and most of them ,which includes Brahmin s also ,to satisfy their need to dole out alms for acquiring merit for after life !) But, the students of these pathasalas are 100% from the least affluent Brahmin purohits families, who are getting trained for Pourohitya duties. Nevertheless , better than nothing and an embryonic effort to boost Vedic Studies. Some Pathasalas are supported by some Dewastanam Boards(TTD,SriSailam,SriKalaHasti etc).
.3) Previously ,ie during my paternal great and grand dads 'era Brahmins were still the affluent class ( inspite of law of diminishing returns having a most of the estate spent over charity, philanthropy and some lost to squatters and the lawless muscled neo land/ war lords) .My Maternal Grand father was a an affluent owner of Bus fleet (Major client for gas kits sold by legendaryMr Sundaram of Present TVS group, he lost the fleet to freedom struggle in 1941 and had to take up job of a chief clerical assistant to an eminent Barrister, inTenali ,Guntur Dist.)
Then it was customary for Vedic scholars as the upper level, affluent Pourohits some also acting as money lenders at the middle level along with Brahmin artists and vidwans( Hari Katha Bhagavatars,Karnatic Vocalists/Instrumantalists/Mridangists & percussionists,Kuchipudi Dance/drama troupes) and poverty stricken and hard up Brahmins at the low level used to be invited on sankranthi/ Ugadi/SriramNavami/MahaSivaRatri/ Dusserah/ Diwali to Vidwat Sabhas for showing off their individual talents and possibly creation of new relationships of mentors and Shishyas. The tradition afterwards was maintained with the help of other village elders in our ancestral village till now. This tradition fortunately is being now revived by the present politically strong sections of the society, in all major Towns and the district HQs towns, lead by enlightened and committed few of the politically/economically rich Reddis/Kammas/Yadavas/Gouds/Naidus/Vaishyas of the Telugu people.
4)The above is being related to emphasize the importance of the community(Linguistic and NOT caste) role in nurturing the concept of Sanskrit revivalism, be it Vedas or Vediic Maths or Vedic Customs. There is a crying need for another charismatic leader in the mold of Swami Vivekananda & Swami Dayanand who can put 'Yagnopavitham' on all who seek to live by Vedic Traditions irrespective of Birth status.Till then we have to endeavor with available support. Fortunately for AP there is a continuity of rule by Reddis / Kammas /Kkshtriya Rajus people's Chieftains who were Rajahs or Vassals(known as Samantha's) of Kakatiya and later Vijayanagar Rulers, through Moghul(Nizam's supervision morphed in to Nizam's rule ,known as DeshMukhs,Manyavars/Mazumdars), Orissa Kings & British era(as Zamindars). Thus, the two community leaders have a background of ruling and supporting socially relevant issues.
5) I am very optimistic about the community involvement and contribution, as is evident from the Community life of NRI s of AP lead by Two Associations of North America.Hopefully the rightful demotion of caste( not fully) experienced by me personally from grand parents to parents era to our own times in interpersonal relationships covering education ,friendships, work environment ,engagement in market places, public transport, temple rituals may lead to a much more balanced society. The next generation is already experimenting, though, tentatively ,with inter-caste/ inter-religion/ inter - lingo/international relationships ,though, with mixed consequences, probably owing to cultural shock arising out of different cultures. Still ,'The hope that eternally rises in the Human Heart is bound to cause universal Harrmony'.
Long live Sanskrit and the True Vedic traditions.
Regards.
