With the prospect of almost whole of the money that was in circulation in 500 and 1000 Rs notes getting deposited in Banks, Govt has taken a surprise action in ordering certain conditions on further deposit of old notes in direct contravention of assurances contained in speech of PM and statements of FM at the time of demonetisation. The objective of demonetisation is no longer spoken of as for eradicating black money (except in election speeches in election states) but is stated now to be to promote digitisation.

A post in indiaresists@lists.riseup. net is having a lot of discussion by many participants on the Demonetisation-- it blames the GUJARATI clan of MODI's staff for the untold misery that decision has caused to the public. Some have condemned the GUJARATI aspect of the blog --but all of them are off the track by not talking of the merits / demerits of the demonetisation itself. . Hereunder u will find a note by me to the blog in this regard. I don't know how many of u will concur with my views but I am circulating it for whatever it is worth.

The whole discussion in this forum has been barking up the wrong tree, emphasising mostly on the Gujarati issue instead of on the merits /demerits of the Demonetisation decision--thus demonising the act of banning the Higher denominations of Currency notes! Yes , probably the Gujaratis, more than other Indians, are abhorrent of black money and are for demolishing it -see, the last time demonetisation took place in 1978, it was again done by a Gujarati- Morarji Bhai - a very great coincidence ! I do not know who was the person responsible for demonetisation in 1948 --was that also the act of a Gujarati !
The debate should be about the aim and methodology of DEMONETISATION--
(a) whether it was a correct decision for achieving the weeding out black money, putting a stop to amassing / stashing of undisclosed cash by corrupt officials and others having disproportionate assets, and rooting out counterfeit currency from the country;
(b) whether the implementation of the decision has been undertaken after due deliberation of micro-planning to attain the objectives without causing hurt to the common man on the street who is, in most cases, earning an honest living after putting in hard work; and,
(c) whether the implementing limbs are honest enough to attain the objectives of the scheme with devotion and sincerity.
My opinion on the above issues:
(a) Surely demonetisation is a strong action because the the stash of undisclosed funds has become useless for the hoarder . However those chaps have found devious and dubious ways to legitimise it, defeating the very objective of the scheme. Modi's idea of depositing the worthless currency in banks has only helped the RED BANKS to wipe out their own deficits on paper but NOT in their real worth.Legally the Income Tax department can slap the maximum of 30 % tax and penalty for non-disclosure till now. That is a huge task and how honestly they will do it is anybody's guess.. The disproportionate assets would mostly be in benami properties instead of cash and the demonetisation does not have much effect on the same. Already there are reports that bribes are being collected in kind instead of cash.Rooting out FAKE Currency has failed since already counterfeit Rs 2000 notes are in circulation within a week of MODI's dramatic announcement of the ban on the erstwhile higher denomination 500 and 1000 rupee currency notes. The same would be happening with the new Rs 500 notes too.

Is Saurashtra not a part of Gujrat State?Let us not go further into it. Call it a coincidence or delibrate plan to keep the demonitization confined to a few people who happened to be from Gujrat with the result people started to attribute it to parochial mindset.I was myself admiring some of the initiatives taken by the Prime Minister but now start questioning the motives if they are really for the poor people and the farmers including demonitization as is being claimed. For example how land aquisition bill was in the interest of the farmers. How the schemes like Smart cities and bullet trains are in the interest of farmers? How make in India and dizitalisation will help the poor ? And now this scheme of declaring legal tender illegal overnight by whatever name it is called will help the poor and the farmers who a re suffering the most. Now that all the 5oo/1000 notes which were in circulation are returning back to bank deposits What happened to counterfeit currency,drug money, terrorist money? It has simply come down to tax evasion by small scale industries and small traders and jewlellers. Now it is being claimed 600 people were on the radar of the Govt. and intelligence agencies for black money. They could have dealt with those cases after the amnesty scheme to unearth black money.Meanwhile one also sees that the PM has a complete control on the Govt. and through the MPs and Ministers seeking to control Parliament thus undermining the very foundation of democracy. How else would you view the complete wash out of the whole session of Parliament over an issue of demonitization ,of which he himself is the architect and should have defended himself rather than leaving it to the finance minister whom he did not take into confidence earlier.Through this scheme it is now crystal clear that the Reserve Bank of India,s independence as final authority for Monetary Policy has been taken away. The Banks are now flush with funds and there will be no more talk of their NPA,S . Further they will reduce the lending rates for loans. Rates for deposits will also be reduced. This will further hurt the small depositers for their savings. Regds

To me, he is an Indian and he belongs to India. The problem is that Modi thinks that India belongs to him. Incidentally, Modi is not a Gujarati; he is a Saurashtrian. Regards.

Absolutely agree with u, Mr Gangoli. Please do not cast aspersions on an entire community.You should instead criticise the PM for having elevated inefficient people of no consequence to the top posts of the country.Dr Rina MukherjiKolkata

I think this email is shameful. To criticize an individual or individuals is acceptable(even though I myself am fully in favour of demonetization), but to denigrate an entire community is a sad reflection on your thinking process.Or do you think Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel were also incompetent Gujeratis ?Was this mail approved by the moderator?
