Re: [IAC#RG] IMPOSITION OF HINDI ON NON HINDI SPEAKING STATES

Dear Dr. Upadhyaya

Now that you have used the right code word HINDUSTANI so we can speak freely.

What are all the people asking for Hindi accepting ?
That (Dev)Nagari script and and some standardised committee drafted Hindi in which there is no culture or history shall become India's national language.

Are we fools to throw out all the common / shared culture of Upper India because Hindus and Muslim couldn't live in peace 150 years ago ?

Are we to still fight over whether Kayasthi "kaithi" should be used or Brahmin Babhani scripts for this so-called "Hindi".

Is this not really about "jobs" in a dog - eat  - dog world, in the same way that Baboo Kehav Chandra Sen mischievously misguided Swamiji Dayandand Saraswati to demand Hindi instead of Sanskrit in Punjab only so that more unemployed and useless Bengali Baboos (short form of Baboon)  would get sarkari naukri in Lahore  ? Is this not what all the "Madrasis" want for English in New Delhi ?

My point is simple - there can be only 1 language for India - HINDUSTANI - the common lingua-franca wherever Hindustanis are to be found.

In conclusion for all my Hindu / Hindi compatriots I would like to offer a personal  story to expand on Shanti Bhushanji's anecdotes of France.

In early 1980's I and my brother were backpacking across Europe for about 3 months. After 1-1/2 months wandering in the Teutonic nations (Denmark, Germany Austria, Switz etc) we reached Paris, France for Bastille Day where in the evening there was this unbelievable (for then)  light and fireworks display with lasers set to music by Jean Michell Jarre. Next to us were 2 Hindu Sri Lankans -young Tamil boys our age, who were illegally in France for work after escaping from Germany (4 months on the run there)  They knew no Hindi or English, we knew no Sinhalese or Tamil, so we ended up speaking to each other in GERMAN which all of us could very easily learn in a month.

Heil Arvind.

hindi is language of most of the hindustanis. we should not see it as imposition. however, there should definitely not be compulsion to speak, read and write in hindi. this should definitely be as per once liking in local/regional/national language.

The very fact so many responses coming  to this topic shows the inherent  feelings of those who comment. When a nation does not learn from history it is condemned to rrepeat it. How URDU was the unifying factor for Pakistan in 1947 but became a dividing factor during the Bangladesh war in 1971 as it was being imposed. People of India even in Hindi speaking areas just do not accept the Sankritised Hindi being imposed in the guise of patriotism and English domination. The  Brahmins of Tamilnadu who due to their knowledge of Sanskrit introduced "JHa, Sah, etc etc" in Tamil during 19th century as these sounds existed in Tamil but not the scripts and so make the language easy to write. But that does not mean Sanskrit is mother of all South Indian languages. It is not. Seperatism can be kindled by these silly vote gathering methods which may get some votes in some states ( a mirage as has shown in recent elections) but can be divisive. Politicians must  govern efficiently first and then do the divisive poltics later.

It is human psychology to resist anything that is imposed, while we go after, paying through our nose, to do things we like, like learning  fro e.g., Russian to work under a a Russian boss or marry a Russian lady. That is the subtle difference. Democracy is about the majority opinion, but minorities too need attention.

It is surprising that those in charge of policy making in NDA  government do not understand the intensity of the anger and frustration  amongst the people in the non Hindi states due to the subtle attempts of Modi government to gradually impose Hindi.
The genuine fear of the people in the non Hindi speaking states is that they would be reduced to second class citizens in the country  if Hindi would be imposed , as those speaking Hindi will get distinct advantage over the non Hindi speaking people at the national level.
Mr. Naredndra Modi does not seem to be aware of the  intense and popular anti Hindi agitation in non Hindi speaking states particularly in Tamil Nadu, when Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri was the Prime Minister.  Schools and colleges had to remain closed for around three months in Tamil Nadu due to anti Hindi  protest by the students. Finally, Mr. Shastri had to give an assurance that Hindi would not be made national language so long as non Hindi speaking people would not want it. The situation has not much changed as far as the imposition of Hindi is concerned.
Today, India has enough problems and there is no feelings of difference in the country on  language issue. Mr. Narendra Modi  should not create new issues by trying to impose Hindi.
Even today, many people in non Hindi speaking states , particularly in Tamil Nadu , feel like aliens as they do not understand Mr. Modi speaking Hindi everywhere without any translators. When he spoke in Hindi to the school children on Teacher's Day , lakhs of school students in non Hindi speaking states felt left out and wondered  as to whether the Prime Minister belong to  Hindi knowing people only.
