I was there at Jantar Mantar as part of a motley group of people when Shri Shambhu Dutt started his Fast unto Death ?. Witnessed the drama that ensued with Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi etc going through motions of persuading him to give up his fast. I learnt later, from a close colleague of Shri Shambhu Dutt that his agreeing to break his fast was a pre arranged thing.
I lost some of my respect for the man that day.
Now I refuse to believe that Anna, Arvind or Kiran will ever do anything substantive towards setting up the Lok Pal or to otherwise root out corruption. The effort has to come from ordinary people sans political ambition.
I believe, Narendra Modi has put fear in the minds of his ministers resulting in much reduced corruption in high places but these people are belierved to be resentful of Modi for having done so. There is no visible impact on daily corruption at lower and intermediate levels of governance perhaps because Modi's message has either not reached them or this has not been transmitted to them by his ministers.

I recall the month of January 2011 very well because I was in India reporting on it for the UK media.
Shambhu Dutt Sharma was the Vice Chairman of TI and was on a pre-announced fast for Lokpal along with 5 others which had been announced in August 2010. It was known that the jittery Congress leadership got Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi, Agnivesh and Sri Sri Raviishekaran to visit Sharma to call off their fast unto death. GSSB's then Secretary Ashok was also backing these persons to appeal the fast to be called off. However, the IAC's convenor Sarabjit had written to GSSB, like Justice Nath, not to trust these people and to carry on the fast.
The end result is that due to those known corrupt persons the Lokpal movement now lies in ruins. The Lokpal when it is established is certain to be the most corrupt body in the country.

NEW DELHI: India Against Corruption, which was an umbrella initiative for anti-corruption crusade and Lokpal campaign, has decided to start a "No Gandhi" campaign against counterfeit currency. In its first major campaign after Lokpal, when Arvind Kejriwal had led a splinter group to start Aam Aadmi Party, India Against Corruption has proposed a new series of currency notes to counter fake currency in circulation. IAC has sent a proposal to RBI to introduce currency notes honouring other Indian other Indian heroes of the Independence movement. IAC has proposed that Rs 100 denomination notes with Mahatma Gandhi series be replaced by images of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rs 500 notes with Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj image, Rs 1,000 notes with Rabindranath Tagore image and Rs 200 with Tipu Sultan series.
Speaking to ET, IAC national convenor Sarbajit Roy said, "This is not a suggestion or representation but a formal request from IAC movement for grievance redressal to safeguard the integrity of the Indian state. Dear All readers,
Some important matters ,relevant to curtail corruption, is under debate.Different views are always invited .It strengths the democratic charector.
To create an institution of Lok Pal ,recommendation was initially made in the year 1968.Inspite of peoples call assembled with Sri Shambhu Dutt Ji &
Sri Anna Hazare and also at various places ,the Institution is still born.
To awaken the people ,and the Conscience of Government and Parliament of India to Govt's failure to frame laws for creating the institution of Lok Pal Satyagrah was observed on 24th Nov.2007 at the Statue of Sardar Vallbh Bhai Patel ,in Hazrat ganj at Lucknow ,U.P.
Even the 2nd Administrative Reforms Commission headed by Sri Moily and constitution by U P A Govt.supported this.
Only God knows when the institution would really start working.

1) At the outset let me inform you that Netaji was my paternal
great-grandfather's student in patriotism, and the student repaid his
debt to his teacher by saving his teacher's life.
2) As you may recall the IAC is part of a larger and ancient patriotic
movement from the 19th century, which is deeply aware of and immersed
in its history and pays homage to all those who came before us and on
whose work we build on today, Netaji included.
3) As IAC is a pan-Indian movement we have to carefully calibrate our
choices for maximum impact and support. I am sure you will not
disagree that the first objective is to dislodge Gandhi and repel his
image from the common psyche rather than replace him by anybody
specific.
4) The 4 names IAC has proposed were selected after considerable
internal discussions in the wider movements, to provide an initial
impact, balanced representations and a better overall shot at success.
Since apparently I shall be personally spearheading this campaign if
we have to do so, I would find it far easier to make a case for Tagore
versus Gandhi, rather than Netaji versus Gandhi for the Rs. 1,000
note.
5) I also want to make it clear that we are presently not changing the
names IAC is proposing. I am proceeding for the annual retreat /
meeting of IAC's parent body today, and I shall certainly faithfully
convey the views of your INA trust to my seniors.
6) May I also say, humbly, it is also because of such sectarianisms
that the Govt is able to successfully divide us. Hence we appeal to
all those with IAC not to press any names at this stage and focus on
the common larger objectives of nation building and anti-corruption..

Gandhiji said that what we got from Britishers was a political freedom. The struggle for economic freedom would give us true freedom.
The villages are enslaved by an urban centric economic system. Entire village masses are suffering from penury and misery. They are migrating to cities, where they fall into a greater trap.
A man, unsung in most of India, brought economic freedom to masses living in villages in preindependence United Punjab. He struggled to free village peasantry from the clutches of money lenders in United Punjab and succeeded very well with two revolutionary Acts in 1936-37. He brought prosperity to villages. Whenever his party came to power he took the role of Revenue minister and left the post of CM to Faizle ur Rehaman and Sikander Bakht. As revenue minister in his Unionist Party led government, he brought many policies in United Punjab that uplifted the rural people from poverty. He exposed Congress and Muslim League so well in front of people that these two parties could never win more than 2 seats in Provincial elections till this man was alive i.e till 1945. His struggle started in 1921 when he left Congress due to its anti rural ideologies. Some years thereafter he formed Unionist Party.
He understood the urban rural bias in those ages so well that he said: " I have greater regard and sympathy for a rural Muslim than a urban Hindu" He was poisoned, allegedly by members of Hindu trading community, at Lahore in 1945 and died. Had he been alive, India would never have been divided. Muslim League's fundamentalist designs were rebuked by Muslim's followers of Unionist Party led by this man.
When a Pakistan Chief Justice took oath, he stated that he owes his rise to policies of this man. This man's picture was displayed in background when this Chief Justice took oath. In 2009, a member of Pakistani Hockey team desired to visit Garhi Sampla in Haryana to take away a handful of soil from this land to fullfill the wishes of his father back in Pakistan.
But this man is almost obliterated from Indian history today because he challenged the urban centric, middle class supported, anti- rural Congress in pre independence India and never allowed it to get more than 2 seats in United Punjab Provincial Assembly. The earlier version of BJP i.e Jan sangh was treated in the same manner by this man.
This man forced Britishers to raise MSP for crops by 1.5 times in a single stroke.
In Pakistan, India's Haryana and Punjab, this man is a household name. He is referred as Rehbaar-A-Azam in pakistan; In India as " Deen Bandhu." Britishers called him " Sir."
