Dear Sarbajit ji

May I join the dialogue as a member of a modest Gandhian group that
had initially started with the Stayagraha idea against the unbearable
curse of corruption which needs to start with internal cleansing and
perseverance .

As usual all our pleas were not acknowledged and repeated requests for
a meeting ignored.Yet thanks to Shambu ji a true old oak we plod on
and MGD & Anand ji is part of us

ON reflecting through the experience I have three comments on the
present discontent and what I see to be a just cause

1 We must acknowledge that peoples anger is not only against
corruption but corruption of the POWERFUL and the CONNECTED .In fact
small corruption is the poor mans substitute for not having a
connection to power
People are appalled and disgusted at the top getting away using the
clout and brazen mendacity characteristic of of present
rulers.Attention of Lokpal should remain focused at the top only.
2 for that reason distrust in the politicos is high for they have
stopped believing the political laments about how pervasive small
time endemic corruption is hurting the poor etc.All this is seen to be
crocodile tears ,a diversion to fritter away the anger and also pure
humbug -the bedst instance of the last is the Congress partys
constant clever maneuver to occupy any vacant high moral ground with
utmost alacrity
3 on the other hand NGO world must be wary of over extended action
and humbly realise that more
and more centralised SINGLE point solutions eg Jan Lok pal can work
out as bad as the disease itself .We need to acknowledge that many
variants must be tried in a country like ours. And remain humble and
sensitive above all to let people be and let them have agency
I see disturbing evidence to the contrary in some parts of Anna
/Ramdev groups behaviour and conduct It appears that many supporters
of recent focussed anti corruption mobilisation efforts are only dimly
aware that single solutions to complex problems of an urbanising
transitionla society can lead to unintended ego-totalitarian-tinpots
and adversarial civil strife
That is NOT Satyagraha

This is not the first time that the UPA chairperson has quietly gone abroad in a manner best described as being furtive. Why the secrecy? Why create the illusion in the public mind that she is in India when she is not, asks rajinder puri

On Monday, Tamil Nadu chief minister Miss Jayalalithaa visited Delhi. She met her Delhi counterpart Mrs Sheila Dikshit. India's biggest TV channel blared: "Will Jaya also meet Sonia?" Was the channel unprofessionally ignorant or was it colluding with the exercise to hide the furtive movements of Mrs Sonia Gandhi? Earlier on the same day, there was a statement issued by Mrs Gandhi deploring the murder of a prominent journalist in Mumbai. Was all this being done to create the illusion in the public mind that Mrs Gandhi was in India while she was not? This is not the first time that Mrs Gandhi has silently gone abroad in a manner best described as being furtive. Why the secrecy? What is the purpose of Mrs Gandhi's undisclosed visits abroad?

An RTI applicant, Mr Ramesh Verma, had sought from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) details of the foreign visits of the Chairperson of the National Advisory Council (NAC) and Congress president Mrs Sonia Gandhi. The Central Information Commission (CIC) forwarded the application to the PMO. "It seems the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry had informed that the Central government had incurred no expenditure on the foreign visits Sonia Gandhi during the last 10 years," CIC commissioner Mr Satyananda Mishra has stated. The application to the PMO was received on 26 February, 2010, transferred to the external affairs ministry on 16 March, 2010 and then forwarded to the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry on 26 March, 2010. However, it was not known by the Cabinet secretariat whether the RTI applicant had been provided with the information that was sought. The CIC commissioner criticised the PMO for its casual approach. The PMO did not obtain the information from the appropriate ministry after the query was specifically directed to it.

Congress leaders are frothing at the mouth demanding total transparency from members of civil society. Probes have been launched against some of them. Should not the government display equal transparency pertaining to India's most powerful politician who is the chairperson of the ruling UPA coalition as well as the chairperson of the government's NAC? They need to answer the following questions:

Did Mrs Gandhi travel abroad on an airline or by a private jet? If the latter, whose jet was it?
What was the purpose of the foreign visit made by the Chairperson of the NAC and the UPA?
What is the itinerary of the NAC Chairperson? Which countries and cities did she, or will she, visit?

And while they are at it, our worthy Congress leaders may as well also address these ancient and perennial questions:

Why does not the government refute the allegation made by a former member of the Soviet government's official KGB Commission, confirmed by the official spokesman of the Russian government addressing the media, that the KGB had been donating funds to Mrs. Sonia Gandhi's family, including her mother, since 1971? Why does the government not demand an apology from the author of the allegation and failing its receipt launch a defamation case against the author and the Russian government?

Why do the government and the Congress party not explain the purpose of the meeting between accused money launderer Hasan Ali and the political secretary of the Congress president, Mr Ahmed Patel, that was investigated and confirmed by Maharashtra police?
The public awaits from Congress leaders Mr Pranab Mukherjee, Mr Digvijay Singh, Mr Kapil Sibal, Mr Chidambaram and the rest, answers to these questions. Transparency, like charity, should begin at home.

I-T Dept to provide political parties' tax return details

                                                                                                                            Jun 17,  1:16 PM

The Income Tax Department has decided to provide full details of tax returns of political parties under the RTI Act after the Central Information Commission (CIC) issued it directives in this regard. The department has taken the step to bring in transparency in the funding of both big and small parties as the information will now be in public domain. According to the official sources, earlier IT department used to restrict such information, citing the section of the Income Tax Act, which allowed denial of such information.

Chief Election Commissioner S Y Qureshi had earlier expressed concerns over the funding of such political parties and had asked the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to scrutinize their accounts.

With the new development, general public will now be able to obtain the details of income, donations and expenditure by all the political parties, which file their income tax returns.

The CIC, in an order in 2008, had asked the I-T department to allow the disclosure of such information.

Govt seeks public views online on blackmoney issue

The government on Wednesday created an email id for public to send their ideas and inputs to tackle issues arising out of blackmoney.

The email -- bm-feedback@nic.in -- has been created on the server of the National Informatics Centre and the public can send their responses on the subject with immediate effect, a senior Finance Ministry officer said on Wednesday.

"General public can send in their responses and inputs like imposing penalties and making penal provisions to tackle with the issue," the officer said.

The government has already constituted a committee headed by Central Board of Direct Taxes Chairman Prakash Chandra to devise new strategies to deal with the issue.

The committee is expected to submit its recommendations in the next six months.

The email account will be continuously monitored by Finance Ministry officials and they would place the messages before the committee headed by the CBDT Chairman. (DD-15.6).

Dear Sarbjit

I absolutely and completely agree with you when you say corruption is like cockroaches in the house which must be radically eradicated / squashed. If it was only a few cockroaches the people could stamp them out on their own, but the scale of the problem is such that only disciplined and professionally trained neutral people can wipe out such vermin with extreme prejudice.
